Just a short drive from Munich is a small area of the Bavaria region of Germany, where tradition is the top priority. We only spent one day in this area of Germany, but it was enough time to appreciate the fairytale roots that inhabit the region. There were swans casually strolling the grounds of Linderhof Palace and houses in Oberammergau painted with murals of fairytale stories. While driving through the Alps, it seemed as though this small village in the Ammer Valley was secluded and separate from the rest of the world, touched only with the good intentions of the locals to keep their traditions alive.
Our final stop in Bavaria was Neuschwanstein Castle (the inspiration for various castles within Disney parks). The castle itself was nothing short of amazing, but it was the views of the region seen from the castle that put our entire day into perspective for me. From the front of Neuschwanstein’s gates we saw a lake with clear blue water, open fields that inhabit the valley, the small village of Schwangau, and an incredible view of the surrounding Alps. It was refreshing to witness a part of the world that seemed so uninterested in conforming or adapting to modern ways, and i can’t wait to go back to Bavaria - hopefully in the winter, when Christmas markets are known to take over nearly every village and town.
